All members are encouraged to attend our 98th Annual Meeting on
Thursday, June 8. The business meeting will start at 6:00pm at
Brookdale Senior Living Community, 1111 Ontario, Oak Park. The meeting packet includes the budget, slate, and program for 2023-24. You can read and download it
here. Our presenter after the business meeting and a lite supper will be Oak Park Village Trustee and Takeout 25 founder, Ravi Parakkat. Please RSVP here.
Drinks & Dialogue
Drinks and Dialogue had an incredibly moving presentation at Shanahan’s Irish Pub Wednesday evening, April 26. The 19 attendees learned about refugees and their challenges in leaving their dangerous homeland for a better life. Forging Opportunities for Refugees in America, FORA, is an after-school program whose mission is to ensure that refugee families are provided access to education sufficient to prepare them to become economically self-sufficient and robustly engaged in American civil life. Dr. Kathleen O’Connor, the founder, Ms. Arkhawan Salih, CEO, and Gowri Rao, Communication Coordinator, relayed the struggles and overcoming hardships through educational assistance. Their stories, mission, and the people they serve are so noble that all attendees are moved to aid in their mission. If you would like to learn more about FORA or donate to their cause, go here.

Candidate Forums for contested 2023 municipal races in Oak Park, River Forest, and Forest Park began in February. This list has all the videos for the contested elections and also recorded candidate statements for the uncontested elections.

Our League's Environmental Committee members reached out to the community every Saturday at the Oak Park Farmer's Market during the month of “Plastic-free July.” They spoke to many people about the elimination of plastics, collected signatures on a petition for the Village to legislate an ordinance for restaurants to replace plastic containers and utensils with compostable ones, and encouraged the use of wax paper and paper towels in place of plastic wraps and bags. They also asked people to vote “Yes”on the Cook County Forest Preserve Referendum that will be on the ballot at the November 8 election. Beverly Graham and Marsha Borders are pictured.

Mills Park Tower Resident Council Election
On Wednesday, June 15, the League of Women Voters of Oak Park & River Forest monitored the Resident Council Board Election for Mills Park Tower, an Oak Park Housing Authority Building.  As a non-partisan organization, our League was asked to ensure this election was run efficiently and fairly. Five candidates were elected from a field on nine, with 64% of the residents participating in the election. We wish this new Board good luck in engaging and representing tenant interests with the housing authority.
