Read about the three referendum questions that were on the Oak Park ballot in November.  The two questions that went through the Oak Park Township Annual Meeting process are non-binding(advisory) and the one question that went through the citizen initiative process (binding) are explained below.

There are also three advisory questions that were proposed by the Illinois state legislature. They are on election interference, additional income tax on millionaires, and reproductive treatments covered by health insurance.

All of these advisory referendum questions passed.

Redistricting Process

Referendum Question:
Should the State of Illinois adopt an independent citizens commission for federal and state redistricing process?
The Illinois Redistricting
Collaborative,
including active engagement by the League of Women Voters of Illinois, has made two major drives to put a referendum on the Illinois ballot to establish an independent redistricting commission that would do a better job of drawing boundaries for both US Congressional Districts and Illinois legislative districts. Unfortunately, these efforts have been stymied by the Illinois legislature and the Illinois courts.

However, it has been discovered that it is fairly easy to put an advisory referendum on a township ballot. The idea is that if enough townships successfully pass such advisory(non-binding) referendums, it would become impossible for the resisters to deny the will of the people. So at the Oak Park Townships' Annual meeting in April, a redistricting question was put forth and approved by those in attendance as a non-binding referendum question to gauge public interest.
Every vote Yes on this referendum question will help tell our local and state officials that this is what people want and will help us create fair maps for all. For more information on Redistriciting(Gerrymandering) visit CHANGE Illinois.

Ranked Choice Voting

Ranked Choice Voting was a binding referendum question on the Oak Park November ballot. This referendum question for RCV is to be used for the election of the Oak Park Village President and Trustees, and if passed, RCV would be used for the 2027 Municipal Election. You can read a Wednesday Journal article on the successful referendum here.

Another non-binding referendum question on the Oak Park ballot is for citizen's ability to propose ordinances. It reads: “Shall the people of Oak Park have the initiative right to amend and propose ordinances by voter petition and enact those ordinances by voter referendum?” Read more about this question that was proposed at the 2023 Oak Park Township Annual Meeting here. This advisory questions also passed.
